Project Description: 25X1A5a1 Mr. Mr. Inspection Report No. 1 - VBF Voice Spread Spectrum Transceiver 25X1A5a1 has developed a breadboard model of a spread spectrum VHF communications system that may satisfy our require- ment for a short range, body concealable system featuring minimum risk of interception by hostile receivers. Before further development is sponsored, we desire to test the = 25X1A5a1 system under simulated field conditions. The present breadboard will be repackaged, put on a frequency in the 300 Mc/s band, and field tested in 2 C t b. Request for Procurement Action: 1 December 1965 c. Initiation Dater 1 March 1966 d. Project Status: 25X1A5a1 M essrs. were ready to demonstrate the transceivers. After discussing the system concept, we went out into the field to try the units. One transmitter blew a transistor ending the demonstration almost immediately. We were not able to make any determination on the range of the transceivers. Also, they demonstrated the signal character- istics on an oscilloscope, a spectrum analyzer, and a receiver to demon- strate"interception immunity. The voice quality seemed adequate. We will need to have the above three test equipments available to the con- tractor when the demonstration is given here. The antenna, especially if it is to be body-worn, is going to be troublesome. The antenna must be broadband which limits its efficiency, plus VHF frequencies are absorbed bthb th y e ody readily reducing effective 25X1A5a1 radiated power. would like any help we can give them in this area. 25X1A5a1 -will be t ad e y o demonstrate the transceivers soon, so we must be in g preparations here. Mr. - indicated that they should be 25X1A5a1 ready in a month. 25X1A9a Distribution: R&D Subject File OL/PD/PCB/CAS R&D Lab OC-OS E SB Monthly (3) EP Chrono 25X1A9a OC-E/R&D-EP/bjp Approved For Release 1999109/07 : m nl automatla A ng and detlass!ffr (8 July 1966) 2820A001200040020'-2
