MEMORANDUM FOR: The Record
On 27 April J. C. King called
and advised him that he had been in touch with
Mr. Mitchell in HEW regarding the Cuban
refugees. Mr. Mitchell advised Colonel King
that Secretary Ribicoff was scheduled to give a
report on this matter bt the NSC meeting on
27 April. He said he was most appreciative of
our offer to be of assistance but said there was
really nothing for us to do at this time. Colonel
King told Mr. Mitchell not to hesitate to call us
if we could be of any assistance.
The Director was given a note advising him
of the above.

"3JECT: Assistance to Cu-:an Refugees
In approvin the Record of Actions os the Al ri1 22, 1961, meeting
of the national Security Council, the President directed that levels of
support for Cuan refugees should see reported to him for recommenda-
tions for their improvement (NSC Action 2406 e). The President also
m pressed his desire that such support should ue open and overt. In
addition, he directed that the adjustr ent of Cu: ans to life in the
United btates should `ie given particular attention :y the Department
of Health, -Education and vielfare.
.A.ccording;ly, it is.requested that the :..ecre:ary of Aiealth,
Education and elfare and the Director o;.. the Central Intelligence
Agency submit a report to this office an these matters as soon as
peesiale, together with such reco ,.mendatixuns for the attention of
the President as they deem appropriate.
