DIARY NOTES
ADD /A 20 October 1952
1. Asked to make a detailed examination of all of the advances
which we are currently making on a particular contract and to outline the whole
technique of how the account is handled.
2. Dr. Tietjen was in to report on his visit to Insofar as medical 25X1A6a
support is concerned he believes that everything is well under control and, in fact,
25X1A6a that the doctor at could handle more work. As a general impression he
felt that it was a very plus and expensive setup for the number of students being
handled. This is confirmed in a later conversation with Matt Baird.
3. Visited with or a half-hour and was brought up to date gen-
erally on his trip to the liar as and the developments in CAT.
1.. Talked with about several problems. I asked him to review his
requirement for a press nor er that it might be fully determined whether it is im-
possible for security or other reasons to do the reproduction contemplated vrith this
press using present facilities at Rosalyn. He assured me that we were not holding
them up on space at this time but, rather, that they could not firm up their require-
ments until they knew what their ceilings were to be. We also discussed briefly
his special problem which used to handle and I will talk with 25X1A6a
about it this week. We also iscusse an arrangement whereby he could get ce
currencies for a library.
5. Matt Baird was in to advise me that on Saturday, following his talk with
Mr. Wolf, he had seen the Director and explained to him his Area Language Training
Program, as well as his proposed increase from 100 to 150 in the Junior Officer
Trainee Corps. The Director approved of both of these Programs.
We also discussed housing at and I agreed to go down to the site
with Matt as soon as the airstrip is finished, Which should be not later than the
first of November. He stated that he believed the Agency should finance the con-
struction of houses so that adequate instructor personnel could be induced to ac-
cept assignments at this station and that, in addition, if houses were immediately
available more training facilities could be moved from the Washington area to _ 25X1A6a
He confirmed Dr, Tietjents point of view that with only thirty-six students
on e site it was a very expensive operation for which we might be severely criti-
cized if it were to become known generally.

M tt d I also discussed With the experience which he has gain-
25X1A6a
ed at he is of the opiniona we ought to go very slowly on
making sure requirements are firm. He also believes that housing is going to be
"I'
very difficult there and points out that instructor personnel would have to go fir
boat from their residences to the day's training areas .... a fifty minute run each I
way. I agreed with him that we should take a very careful look at this before pro-
ceeding further.
