STAT Approved For Release 2003/12/ JOHN FOSTER DULLES John Foster Dulles was born in Washington, D. C. in 1888. He received his B. A. from Princeton University in 1908; studied at the Sorbonne (1908-9); and received his LL.B. from George Washington University in 1911. He also re- ceived he honorary LL.D. degree from the following institutions: Tufts (1939), Princeton University (1946), Wagner College and Northwestern University (1947), Union College (1948), University of Pennsylvania (1949). Since 1911 Mr. Dulles has bean associated with the law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell, in which he is now a senior partner. During the first World War, Mr. Dulles served as a major in the Army, and was attached to the General Staff. In 1919 he was an adviser to President Wilson at the Paris Peace Conference and later worked with Herbert Hoover on post-war relief problems. During the period between 1927 to 1942, Mr. Dulles served in serveral important posts dealing with political and economic problems in Poland, the Scandinavian countries, Germany, and the Far East. From 1942 to 1945, Mr. Dulles was principal adviser to presidential candidate Thomas E. Dewey. Mr. Dulles served at the San Francisco Conference which drafted the UN Charter and has since been a delegate to the U.N.G.A. meetings of 1946-47-48-50. He has also served as a delegate to several conferences of the Council of Foreign Ministers. In 1949 Mr. Dulles was appointed Senator from New York to fill the unexpired term of the late Senator Robert F. Wagner. At the present time, Mr. Dulles is one of the principal consultants to the Sec-;et, ry of State. Mr. Dulles is also a trustee of the Rockefeller Foundation; chairman of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; member of the New York State Banking Board; and chairman of the Federal Council of Churches com- mission in Just and Durable Peace.
