Col. W lljam Carroll, Retired,

Col. William A,, Ca __, _SAR;

11949, died Sunday in Georgetown
,Hospital after an operation. He
was 68.
Col. Carroll, a veteran of both
World Wars, came to"-vVashing-
ton shortly after the Japanese
attack on Pearl Harbor for duty
n the Office of the Inspector
11-He--served in that Rost from
1942 to 1946, part of the time in
.the China-Burma-India theater,
jand was awarded a certificate of
(commendation for his service.
After his retirement from ac`-
tive duty in 1946, Col. Carroll
,served two years as special as-
sista.nt. to the administrator of
the Vrar Assets Administration
before joining CIA in 1949.
During World War I, Col. Car-
roll served in the 341st Infantry.
He maintained an active Reserve
status in the Army between the
wars while he was in business in
his native Chicago
Col. Carroll, wll'1i lived in

ments for 16 years, attended
,Armour Institute in Chicago and
later took special courses at
Notre Dame University. He was

former Miss Ethel Schad of
Louisville, Ky., whom he married:
in 1919; two daughters, Mrs.
Robert O. Conley, 3602 Thornap.

A requiem mass will be offered
at St. Thomas Apostle Church
at 9 a.m. tomorrow. Burial with
military honors will be in Ailing
ton National Cemetery.
The family has requested that
