Approved For Releas& OOO/O8/2?E --RDP71 TOO730O00500090031-5 NO FOREIGN DISSEM/NO DISSEM ABROAD CONTROLLED DISSEM/BACKGROUND USE ONLY 25X1X Evidence of the USSR's Unwillingness to Sell India a Strategic 25X1 an unspecified type of bomber for the Indian Air Force. The Indian defense plan, however, states a requirement for a deterrent medium bomber force composed of American B-17 type aircraft in addition to a fighter/bomber force. Although the Soviets have both types -- TU-16 medium bomber and SU-7 fighter/ 25X1 X bomber _ -- and have a rted a number each to Free World countries, 25X 1 D was all the USSR could offer the SU-7B. The USSR still has veil over 1000 TU-16's in service and could easily provide India with a number of these aircraft. The apparent failure 25X1 X t.o offer the medium bomber suggests that the USSR is sell India a strategic bomber with a nuclear capability.
