two recent publications which contain most of the information
sought by your constitueet.
l'he most recent compilation of available informatiee
relating. to foreign students in the UR appears in an untlassificd
Intelligente Report (copy enclosed) prepared by the bureau of
bdelligence and Research of the Department of State. ibis Report
gives the number of students from free wor1411 countries,
country, now attending colleges in the USSR. Information concerning
fields of study and the particular colieges attended is not available.
?in addition to studeets from free world countries, many students
from Xuropean and Asian communist countries attend bovist
colleges. We know ef no recent unclassified information on the
number of suck students, but we believe that there are approxi-
mately 10,000 at this time.
The results of a comprehensive survey of forei den s
in the United States, by country of origin, fields of study, and
colleges attended, appear in 0,pea Doors 19601 a publication of the

MEMORANDUM FOR: THE DIRECTOR
Attached is a reply to Senator Douglas'
letter asking for information re students in
bloc universities and bloc students in American
universities. Previously I talked with the
Senator's office indicating our answer might
take a few days to research and at that time
they requested us not to go to too much trouble
since this was merely the request of a
constituent whom they wanted to help, if
possible.
