Approved For Release 2002/06/14: CIA-RDP71 B00185A000100020106-4 14 October 1966 1. I have included with the "Creating Second Sources of Engineering Manpower" a couple of other items which you may find interesting. The number of poet doctorals is surprisingly large to me, and you will note that there is some thought among the educators that some of these people are trying to avoid going to work. In any event, the thinking seems to tend more to "science for my sake" rather than "science for science's sake". 2. The "philosophy of engineering" paper explains pretty explicitly why scientists and engineers have tended to travel down separate roads, and Dunning's paper "Do Scientists and Engineers need each other?" may be particularly interesting to you only in terms of the conclusions in which he states that science and technology has rarely gone along hand in hand.
