FL U11 t i. Approvecor Release 2002/06/14: CIA-RDP71BQ,0185A000100020121-7 1 August 1966 MEMORANDUM FOR: Deputy Director for Science and Technology 1. This is a pretty good summary article on a new frontier in solid state, and, if possible, I think you will find the entire article worthwhile reading for two reasons: (a) ORD, OEL and others will, no doubt, be proposing schemes built around devices employing the Gunn effect, and 25X1A (b) About a year ago in OEL, I opposed alIstudy 25X1A 25X1A contract forl to look into the basic theories of this effect which were not then understood. My primary reason for this was thati ould only be a drop in the bucket in comparison to DOD money su ortin the work, and, furthermore, I was not sure that was the right 25X1 A bucket. Now, at about the time w en the results of this contract would be available, we have this excellent unclassified article. This illustrates that we ought to conserve our resources to strongly push unique ideas and applications peculiar to our needs. 2. If you are very short of time, I suggest you read only the summary paragraphs I have marked on the last page of the article. 25X1A Approved For Release 200 /r4 ? CIA-RDP71 B00185A000100020121-7
