Reference (a) has been very carefully reviewed and is considered to be a very excellent study. It is recommended that the comments submitted herewith as enclosure (1) be incorporated in the document prior to printing. Page 2, Line 8 - Recommend delete "possibly including closed-cycle diesel systems for submerged propulsion". Comments All available evidence indicates that the "F" Class is conventionally diesel powered. The evidence of closed-cycle propulsion in the "G" Class is quite tenuous. 25X1D 2. Page 3, Line 1 - Recommend are probably nuclear powered and possibly missile equ ppe submarines". Comment: ONI does not believe that sufficient evidence is yet available on which to base a conclusive statement of nuclear propulsion; hence, the inclusion of the word "probable". "Missile equipped" vice "ballistic missile equipped" is believed more appropriate in this instance, in that the possibility of cruise type missiles should not be overlooked. 3. Page 5, Line 10 - Recommend the inclusion of the total tonnage as a parenthetical expression in this sentence. Comments It is felt that the inclusion of the tonnage figure would provide a clearer picture of the production involved, and would also serve as an indication of relative costs. 4. Page 7, Line 15 - Recommend "about 50%" vice "over 50%". Comment: Increase was just under 50%. 5. Page 8, Line 3 - Recommend "and an unidentified class of submarine (possibly probably nuclear powered." Line 6 - Recommend "and re probably nuclear powered, possibly missile equippe . Comment: Comment #2 above applies in this instance as well. 6. Page 10, Line 2 - Recommend "during 1957" vice "in the early part of 1957". Comment: The programs were phased out early in the year, but production continued throughout most of 1957. 7. Page 11, Line 6 - Recommend "are probably nuclear powered and in series pro- duction in shipyards...". Comment: Comment #2 above also applies in this instance. With regard to deletion of "probably" as it applies to the shipyards, it is believed that sufficient evidence is available on which to base a conclusive statement. Page 12, Line 5 - Recommend "Unidentified submarines have been reported in both the Northern and Pacific Fleet areas. In May 1961, a new class of probable nuclear powered submarine, possibly missile equipped, was photographed in the Soviet Northern Fleet. This submarine has been designated "H" Class. There is, as yet, however, insufficient information available to classify or equate the "H" Class or any of the unidentified submarines with known project numbers". Comment: Since the "H" Class is the only Soviet probable nuclear powered submarine which has been identified, it's inclusion in this discussion is recommended. Line 10 - Recommend delete "possibly employing a closed-oycle diesel". Comment: Comment +1 above applies. 25X1D 9. Page 14, - The last sentence in the remarks column implies that 25X1D submarines constructed at shipyard 25X1D re operating in the Northern Fleet. Recommend ecause of the probable early construction at Shipyard 25X1D 25X1D _ units constructed t Shipyard are considered likely candidates for the operational nuclear powered submarines in the Soviet Northern Fleet." 10. Page 16, Line 15 - Recommend "In 1957, a "Kotlin" Class hull was completed as a guided missile destroyer (surface-to-surface missile launcher). Comment: ONI believes that the prototype unit of the "Kildin" Class was in advanced stages of construction as a "Kotlin", but had not yet been completed as such. The class designation "Kildin" has been accepted by NATO and replaces terms such as "modified Kotlin" or "Kotlin conversion." 11. Page 16, Line 18 - Recommend "guided missile destroyer" vice "destroyer". Comment: Ships of the "Krupnyy" Class are DDGs, not DDs. 12. Page 17, Line 3 - Recommend "guided missile destroyer" vice "Destroyer". Comment: The comment immediately preoeeding applies. 13. Page 17, Line 5 - Recommend "guided missile destroyer" vice "missile launching destroyer". Comment: Guided missile destroyer is more appropriately descriptive. Missile launching destroyer could imply guided missiles, ballistic missiles or free rockets.
