NIL 14, EC1 X99, (Case Will Pose New McCarthy Vale By Marquis Childs CLOSE ASSOCIATES of President isenhower are now more than ever con inced that his way of "handling" Sen. oseph McCarthy has been proved right. y consistently turning he other cheek and responding with a soft nswer or no answer at 11, the President has let in until, in this hopeful 7iew, he has alienated post of his followers. With McCarthy's direct CPYRGHT Approved For Release : CIA-RDP70-00058R000100040009-7 nd the approaching elections in 16, most epublicans, whether they like it or not, ust follow the Eisenhower banner. The alternative is to split the party so violently that even with the Eisenhower name again at the head of the ballot viet{ ry would be mpossible. If the President hail hit back at Mc- Carthy, he would merely have given the Senator an opportunity to trade blows. on a level of seeming equality with the Chief Executive. By not engaging in angry ex- change, much as Mr. Eisenhower has been tempted to do so, he has main- tained the dignity of the Presidency above factional strife. Thus, in the view of his associates, his stature has increased while that of McCarthy has dwindled. Shortly after the new Congress'convenes Senate Republicans; may be confronted with another test of whether;,b.eir alle- giance is to McCarthy or the President. Senator-elect Clifford P. Case of New Jersey, who was elected by a hair-line margin, has announced that in accord. with a campaign pledge he,will challenge Mc- Carthy's right to have a place on any S e n ate committee with investigative powers. If this challenge should lie put to a vote, Republicans would be on the spot. They were on record, 24 to 2%.10-1118t cen- sure for Senator McCarthy. Bi that was before the Senator publicly accused the President of softness toward communism. But individual fortunes to one side, there is increasing evidence of the extremism of ose who back McCarthy. A number of icials in Washington have recently re- calved in the mail an extraordinary docu- ment listing the names of 140 individuals? organizations and publications as followers the Communist Party line. This is based, the statement that "on November 24,. '953, the Communist Party issued orders. o fight McCarthyism.'" AMONG THOSE on the Ash;. are Chief!? That is why some are questioning the wis- dom of the House IJn-Ameriqan Activities Committee in intimating tk~t the Depart- ment of Justice should act'against such hate groups as the National . Renaissance Party. While the propoganda they put out is full of racial and religious hatred, it reaches for the most part only those of the lunatic fringe who are already_infected With the virus of hate. Such action also would seem to be an admission that these splinter groups actually were effective and that Americans subjected to this kind of propaganda might be in danger of succumbing to it.
