On 22 July Kelly Johnson commented that he hoped that a "ramp" was being used to support the weight of the man required to inspect installed J-75 engines, required under a recent procedure established following the last U-2 loss at Kelly remarked that the U-2 structure in the tailpipe region is very light in weight and delicate. He was particularly worried about the possibility of spring- ing the round U-2 structure in the tailpipe area if proper consideration is not given to preventing damage to the U-2 during the inspection procedure. 2. Kelly admitted he did not know what procedure is being followed now to prevent damage to the U-2 structure in the tailpipe region. 25X1A Research and Development Special Activities 25X1A lR&D/OSA:hmj (22 Jul 66) 1s ?r1 bu on: 1 - D/M/OSA 2 -- D/SA 3 - AD/R&D/OSA 4 -- r sD/R&D/OSA /OSA 61 af~O /O A 7 - RB/OSA IDEALIST SECRET Approved For Release 2002/08/06 : CIA-RDP68B00724R000200200055-8
