1. Executive Committee. Jack Smith and Colonel White announced at the
Executive Committee that a CIA advertisement that appeared in The New York
Times soliciting technical specialists received over 128 responses and the number
is growing. In comparison, another ad, without CIA attribution, evoked only 25
replies. I asked the Office of Personnel to keep me informed on situations of this
nature as I had no knowledge of this development and could not speak to the success
of this mission. I further asked the Office of Security to run a check on these
applications to see whether or not there is any change in the ratio of Security
disapprovals as against other forms of recruitment.
