Approved For Release 2D00/05/24: CIA-RDP62-00865R00'0100070006-0 GUATEMALA Power Production in kwh Year Total 1951 79,000,000 The source of powr in Guatemala is primarily hydro-electric. the Most import utility is Empresa Electrica de Guatemala, a subsidiary of American & Foreign Power Col, which supplies all power to Guatemala City and the surrounding area. It is building a new 3,OOOkw hydro-electric plant near Palin which should bean operation in 1954. The principal public utility, Empresa Hidroelectrica del Estada, is also building a new hydro-elecr is plant which will supply an additional 1, 800kw . spite of these additions, there is a serious shortage of facilities, and the authorities anticipate rationing electricity in the Guatemala City area this year. The Minister of Communi- cations and Public Works has prepared a program calling for five now hydro-electric installations with a total capacity of 11,200kw.
