Reference: Memorandum of Request dated 21 November 1958

1. The following materials are forwarded in response to the
reference request:
a. Towns of Priority interest for Satellites and USSR
(6 copies each)
b. Areas of Interest in the Satellites and USSR, with
reasons for interest (6 copies each)
c. CIA Requirements for Urban Area Studies (6 copies)
d. Guide to the Collection of Intelligence on Soviet
Topographic Maps Through Observation and Elicitation
(1 copy)
e. H arian Cartography,, 1958 -- article to appear
, now in Reproduction (1 Thermofax copy).
2. The Special Research Branch reports that it has not
produced any research reports on the organization and structure of
Soviet geodesy and cartography since the issuance of External
Research Report No. 8, dated June 1954, which is attached.
There are, however, 3 attachments herewith relating to more recent
research concerning Soviet geodesy sad cartography. The first
is a map that outlines new surveys being undertaken in triangulation.
This may be of interest for use as background in the possible de-
briefing of knowledgable sources. The second item shows a revision
of the organization of Soviet mapping. It does not, however?
include the Soviet Naval hydrographie organizations. The third
item consists of a series of organizational outlines of 4 typical
types of map factories in the USSR. This also may be of interest
for possible debriefing purposes.
3. With further reference to the third paragraph of the
memorandum of request, it is assumed that the 501st Engineering
Group has access to the NIS Chapters IX and Sections 19 of
Chapter I, dealing with mapping agencies and programs.
