On April 19, 1954, on the occasion of a meeting of the Los
~ingeles World Affairs Council, Chairman Lewis L. Strauss
announced the intention of President Eisenhower to arrange for
an International Conference of scientists dealing with the
peaceful uses of atomic energy. Later that year on December 9,
the United Nations meeting in General Assembly proposed that
such a conference be called not later than August, 1955.
An Advisory Committee composed of scientists from seven
nations, including Professor Rabi as U. S. representative,
met in New York on January 17-28, 1955, and established the
Rules of Procedure and the Topical Agenda. The Conference is
to beheld August 8-20, 1955, in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Department of State has asked the Commission to be respon-
sible for the preparation of U. S. plans for participation in
this Conference. The General ,?;anager has named Dr. George L.
saeil, formerly Assistant Director of the Reactor Development
Division and presently a Consultant to the Commission, to be
responsible for preparing the U. S. planning for participation
in this Conference. Jr. Weil will communicate with you shortly
regarding suggestions for participation in this Conference
by your institution.
