During the latter pert of July and early August 1955, the Pan
American Kmatituto of Geography amd istory held its Sixth general
Asseably in Mexico, D. F., with mopping officials from all of the
Americas present. Since the position of geogrephic Attach?n Latin
America bed been abolished by the Department of State in 1953, the
receipts of maps, related publications and information on mopping
activities have decreased considerably. It was deemed advisable that

2. Activities
During the period 16 July-3 August, numerous individual meetings
were held vith the heads of mapping organisations in *mintiest,
Brasil, Chile Venezuela, Honduras pad moet of the other countries of
Central and South Merles, aa well as some of the Caribbean couatries.
Operations, based upon syropees of relationships, were aimed at the
reastivation of exchange reletionships, determination of the requirements
of the other orgenixations for U. S. maps and the clarification of
the requiremests of the Jae egencies Of the United States government.
&a addition, some new contacts were developed.
Consultations were held in the nobassy with Mr. Snow, the Chargi
d'Affaires, estivral Van Atte, Army Attach 6.9 Major Jenseno Acting Air
AttachO? Mr, Bourgerie, Counselor of Embassy for Economic Affairs,
and several other officers, includieg fiscal and security. Detailed
coavereations were held with the general Services Officer and Mr. Ortiz,
one of his men, and with Miss Mollie MODonald, librarian, resulting in
action which it is ho vill lead towards the fulfillment of 70 out-

of State, and bad long been inactive. It is hoped that the conversatiens
will result generally in more action in procurement natters. Mr. Engler:by,
General Services Officer, directed Mr. Ortiz by memorandum, to aggreseively
activate the requests, working with the Librarian. In addition, Mr.
Engleriby addressed a letter to Mr. Ceayo? than Executive Director of the
Bureau of Inter-American Affairs, urging that all consideration be seven
to the re-establishment of the positien of Geegesphic Attech4 in Latin
America. W. Snglesby? himself, used to be Exec:Wiwi Director of this
Bureau at one time.
Serie limited erocurement was conducted on an active basis in the
bookstOres in Mexico, but no visits were made to professional or
governmental organisations.
Participatlon in the PAX meetings occupied a coneiderable amount of
time. This participation was necessary because of the role as a Delegate
and for the further reason that all sapping officials atteniel all of the
sessions at the Cludel UbLversitaria which was several miles out of the
city. My contact with these men could hest be made at the site of these
meetings.
3. Difficulties:
The only difficulties encountered were a result of the lack of
organisation inherent in the Mexican handeleg of the Asseablye Tbre leek
of central registration facilities for example, e it very difficult
to locate the eapelng officials daring the first few days of the meetings.

This attendance at the meetings in Mexico N F. marks the first
time that the haa participated in
PAIGH matters. In this sate capacity at an earlier times Dr. Outhe
was active in the PAIGH. The opportunities offered, for personal contact
are:most helpbil to a fuller development of the program of map and report
acquisition. It i8 even believed that some influence can be exerted in
developing certain activities of the PAIGH in such a manner that they
will be more beneficial to the interests of the mapping organipationsu
