REFERENCES
1. The village of Stayki is located about two kilometers northwest of Ivateevichi
(approximately N 52-42, E 25-17) in 1'vatsevichskiy Rayon, Its population
was about 1,200.
2. The homes of most of the inhabitants were on' either side of the dirt road
which led from Ooshehevol to Kholopya (N 52-IMF, E 25,40). The houses were
numbered. None of the streets had sidewalks. Most of the houses had
thatched roofs and a few had tile roofs.
3. The village bad no electricity, plumbing, or sewerage system. A well was
located a short distance from each home. The water in the pond nearby was
not fresh and was used only for fowl and barnyard animals.
4. A telephone line connected Stayki with Ivatsevichi and Goshchevo. There
were only two telephones in the village, one at the village soviet and the
other at the kolkhoz office (see sketch for location of various offices in
Stayki). Although these telephones could be used by anyone, the inhabitants
seldom used them. The village was served by the broadcast relay station
(radiouzel) in ivatsevichi. There was no bus stop in Stayki.
5. There was no church in Stayki, so villagers attended the Orthodox church in
Ivatsevichi.
6. The office of the village soviet was staffed by a director, a secretary, a
financial agent, and a mil tia representative. Except for an occasional
showing of a motion picturo,the club of the village soviet was seldom used.
its windows were boarded up, and there was no furniture in the building. the
Village store was well stocked and carried groceries, with the exception of meat,
and dry goods, a few articles of clothing, and vodka. A feldsher was in
charge of'the village dispensary.

and had a capacity of 1,000 tons of grain, Both granaries were guarded at
night.

The septennial school taught the fifth, sixth, and seventh grades. One
branch school (No. 2 on the sketch) taught the fourth grade in the morning
and the third grade in the afternoon. The other branch school (No. 8 on
the sketch) taught the second grade in the morning and the first grade in
the afternoon.
Comment: Goshchevo is probably identical with Goshchev 25X1
