In late 1949,,the first containers with enriched. UFV arrived. With
a large group of I;Ioscow representatives present, the first experiment
was conducted by Emilyanov who himself kept th; record. the following
suaues were carried o7 'it consecutively: hydrolysis, purification,
and reduction. fermans had no access to the hydrolysis and reduction
sections of the buildinU. All construction wor', had been performed
by Soviet personnel and only Soviet operators were employed.
Hydrolysis of UFO (uraanium he::afluoride) to UP4 (urranium tetrachuoride
was accomplished with the use of distilled water. in the subsequent
pur: ficatioz6process, UF4 was converted into uran;yl nitrate which
was subjected to the other extraction method. in the subsequent
reduction process;. t o purified uranyl nitrate was converted into
uranium tetrachloride which was then reduced with calcium or. sodium.
Two experiments were conducted, each of them for the duration of one

the reduction procoss. A i'reah quantity of U?6 was made available
for the second, exporiment. The total quantity of UP6 processed
amounted to soe 5t00.,_;ram3. Data on the degree of enrichment of the
UP6 are not available:. ^he Soviets appeared discontented and were
hetrd saying: "the UF i3 not yet very good." 25X1
Jon some time after termination of these experiments, no activities 25X1
were observed at the ..ilding housing the pilot plant. Shortly
aftcrwarda they were, nowcver, resumed by the Soviet;,. German
personnel had no access.
