the following observations iii Novorossiysk between 23 and 25
1. The old SOVTORGFLOT pier was still completely demolished.
2. The commercial oiling pier was located between the SOVTORGFLOT pier and
pier No. 1. At the end of the oiling pier,there were bollards which enabled
ships to tie up stern to and refuel from underwater fuel connections (sic). A
tanker wasM1,seen to load in this manner.
4. A ~ merchant, ship loaded grain at pier No. 3. This ship was moored
at berth No. 22 osl 23, in the vicinity of the grain elevator. Passenger
vessels used the other side of the pier. The base of the pier was in damaged
condition and was being repaired. On the pier there was a two-story build-
ing in which there was a atgnal station, staffed by an officer and eight
enlisted men.
5. Piers Nos. 4 arid 5 appeared to be used almost exclusively by the Army and
Navy, although tankers with an estimated tonnage of 5,000 to 10,000 loaded
at pier No. 5.
