There were few public telephones in or near Tientsin amusement places, except in theater ticket offices. Telephone directories are not available in most stores, but the numbers of firms or government agencies could be obtained by calling the telephone company. Directories which were available in stores were usually out of date. 4. The house at Number 9, Ch'eng To (2110/1795) Road, Tientsin, was being used as a residence for the families of Public Security Bureau (Kung An Chu, 0361/1344./ 1555) personnel. Occasionally various members of the Public Security Bureau would go into or come out of the house. 5. A sanitarium for Chinese Communist soldiers was at Number 77, T'ai Erh Chuang (0669/0348/545) Road, North, near the entrance of Ch'eng To Road. This sanitarium was surrounded by a high red wall. Most of the buildings in the compound were two stories high and old. There were guards posted at the gate. 6. The factory is in a large rectangular-shaped building of modern construction with large glass windows all aroiuid the upper floor. The interior of the building could not be readily observed from ,he outside, but the noise of machines in operation could be heard as late as midnight. 25X1 authorities recently had the y put into effect a new law that required all stores to pay addi- t:.ona.l taxes for past years. This new law pertained to the collection of evaded taxes. Under the new ruling, stores were requested to pay the back taxes on by-products of wares sold. during past years. These by-products included food left over after a restaurant :ustomer had-finished eating and had paid his bill. This left-over food could be resold and therefore was taxable.
