Com>aent. the following observations were made of the
pier and the warehouses of the China National Tientsin Land and Transport Company
(Chung Kuo Kuo Ying.T'ien Ch'ing Lu Yun, 0022/0948/0948/3602/l131/3160/7120/6663).
The installations described in the respective paragraphs are keyed to the attached
sketch.
1. The entire group of warehouses were of the same design and were built of red brick
covered by a sheet metal roof. The walls were painted pale blue and the doors were
painted black., There were no special signs on the warehouses except that they were
numbered separtely. The doors of the warehouses extended to the level of the loading
platform, which was in front of each warehouse. There were glass skylights on the
roofs of the warehouses. The walls were solidly l.uilt and were reinforced with bricks
on the outside. The warehouses were all approximately 25 Chinese feet in height.
2. There was a watch tower at each corner of the compound. The towers were slightly
lower in height than the warehouses. The towers were built of bricks and had an
open roof. They had three openings on each side of the tower face. There were no
guards in the towers.although there were approximately 10 guards seen patrolling
in the vicinity of the piers and the warehouses. Two of the auards were armed
with submachine guns; the rest were equipped with rifles. The 25X1
guards wore the same type of uniforms as the regular soldl ers, except that their
uniforms were a little darker and their caps were not fur lined.
3. The pier that was located in front of the warehouse area was constructed of wooden
materials. It was about 500 feet in length and was connected to the land by means
of five "boardwalks." Although the pier was not new, it appeared to be quite solid.
4. The entire warehouse area was enclosed by a barbed wire fence approximately six
feet in height. There was a red light on the top of each corner of the fence and
on the fence halfway between each corner.

5. The edge of the bank near the pier area was about three to four feet higher
than the rest of thl surrounding land. In addition, it had been reinforced
with lumber to prevent the bank from collapsing.
6. There was a railroad siding within the compound connecting with the rail line
running along the rear of the compound. Most of the siding within the compound
was single-tracked,;although there were some double-tracked lines.
7. The three warehouses near the water were shorter in length than the two warehouses
in the rear of the qpmpound. All were about the same width. In addition to the
warehouses, there were open lots within the compound that could be used as
storage areas. t:.
8. The double-tracked railroad which paralleled the compound in the rear was a
main railroad artery. Export cargos from nearby provinces were shipped to this
point and loaded onto foreign ships. Most foreign ships docking at Tientsin
dock at this pier.
9. There were 17 separate piles of cargo in this location. Each pile contained
cargo packed in burlap sacks similar to rice sacks and were all covered with
straw mats.
10. These were the gateways to the compound. The center gate was closed, but the
one on the left was open for pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The gate on the
right was used for trains. Both open gates were guarded by military personnel.
11. There were 25 piles of cargo piled at this location. Each pile contained cargo
packed in burlap sacks similar to rice sacks and were all covered with straw
mats.
12. There were between 20 to 30 mud or wooden houses in this area. The houses were
not arranged in any order and were not believed to be connected with the pier
area.
13. This area was flat land.
14. This area was farm land, and the ground was reddish in color.
15. This warehouse contained an estimated 700 rolls of white newspaper.
Comment. All. the warehouses were closed except for the warehouse described 25X1
n mum er 15. The pier was located approximately 20 minutes sailing distance
from Tientsin enroute toT'an&ki. There was no other pier in the vicinity.
