On 14 December 1954, it was observed that a wooden footbridge had been 25X1
built by the Soviets 700 to 800 meters north of the railroad bridge over
the Bug River at Brest-Litovsk. A construction site was apparently being
installed there. Between 4 and 18 January 1955 extensive construction work
was observed there. Work was done on four bridge piers. Boarding up work
indicated that a concrete bridge was under construction. Two of the
bridge piers were in the river and one pier each was on the two banks of
the river. A temporary spur track was being laid from the Western Railroad
Station at Brest Litovsk to the construction site. It was believed that
this track would be used for-the hauling construction materials. On 18
January 1955, a Polish railroad pilot who guided the "Blue Express"
through Poland stated that the Soviets were building a new railroad // ...
bridige fats fWaigN i !'c near Brest-Litovsk. This bridge was to be connected
with the 1laliilrMio! railroad station.
Z
Comment. The single-track rail bridge which at present scans the
Bug River at Brest-Litovsk is a bottleneck on the main Soviet supply
railroad line between Moscow and Frankfurt/Oder via Brest-Litovsk. Therefore,
the construction df a new railroad bridge over the Bug River appears
plausible. After completion of this bridge, the capacity of this supply line
will be essentially increased. It was undoubtedly due to military reasons
that the new bride will be built about 800 meters distant from the old
bridge. The "Blue Express" is the name for the Soviet leave train operating
between Frank['urt'Od.er and Brest-Litovsk.
