When the Germans arrived at Zavod 2, the plant buildings were empty and in an eitremely poor state of repair. In November 1953 when the last group of German specialists left, Zavod 2 was operating directly under the supervision of the Ministry of Aviation Indus%ry and was engaged in the development of turbo-jet and turbo-prop engines as well as in the establishment of production methods for aircraft plants in serial productiono Between mid-1947 and November 1953, the personnel at Zavod 2 worked on the modification and/or development of the fol- lowing enginess BMN 003, JUNO 004, JUMO 012 - 0121 - 012B, and B1N 018 turbo-jets; BMN 028, JUNO 022, Object A-022, Object M-022, Object 11-2, Object K, Object D, and Object C turbo-prop engines and component parts. The number of employees at the plant ranges from 1500 to 2000. S1 WOMs Between 1946 and May 1947, the Germans repaired the plant buildings and installed the dismantled equipment as it arrived from Germany. By August 1947 two temporary test stands were sufficiently completed to begin testing components of the BMW 003 and JUNO 004, and further development and modification of these two engines were under way. Until the spring of 1948, the Germans at Zavod 2 were divided into four distinct groupas 0101-1, the ex-Junkers engine division working under SCEBIBZ; OIB-29 the ex-BMW engine division working under PRESTIL; OKB-39 the ex-Askania group working under LAERTES; and 01?-4, the ex-Siemens group under Kurt MUELLER. Prior to November 1946, while under Soviet control in lantern Germany, BMW was engaged in the development of the 003 and Junkers in the development of the 004 engines. After their deportation to Zavod 2 and until the spring of 1948, these groups continued to work as two separate or- ganizations on their former projects and in competition with each other on the design and development of a turbo-jet engine called "Project B" by the Soviets, but known to the German groups as the former JUMO-012. In the spring of 1948, as a result of an extensive reorganization, 0KB-1 and OKB-2 were combined to form one OKB or design department. O1?-3 was situated in the Zavod 2 compound but confined to Building 21 and worked as an entirely self-contained unit with its own administration, stores, etc.; it has no connection or contact with the rest of the plant. This group of 35* former Askania people worked on the following projeotss 1) Repair of the standard Askania controls on about 100 V-1 missiles which were completed in 1948 and shipped (2) Re-design of the V-1 control system, substituting electrical for pneumatic drive in gyroscopes; (3) Development of an automatic aircraft flight control on the lines of the PATIN PKS-12 course control which was fitted to the Me-109 and fl-190 aircraft dur- ing 1944; (4) Development of a throe-oomponent automatic pilot; one prototype was completed in the summer of 1950 and another was nearing completion when the group left Zavod 2; (5) Expansion of the three-component control to include automatic take-off and landing; this development was still on the drawing boards in September 1950. OKB-3, including personnel and equipment, was transferred to oscow in September 1950.
