1. The Resita steel combine is linked to the Rumanian national railway system
through Caransebes and Timisoara. In addition, a plant railway system links
the various sections of the combine. There are several macadam roads leading
from Resita.
2. The combine is surrounded by a barbed wire fence and entrance is strictly
forbidden. Workers can only'.go from one section to another on legitimate
business. Each worker has an identity badge which specifies his place of
work. Rumanian troops and police armed with submachine guns and rifles
are on guard. Internal security is provided by factory guards which are
under the Securitatea, and men in plain clothes who-are located in the
administrative buildings. The combine has its own fire department which is
provided with modern equipment.
3. At the beginning of 1950, antiaircraft installations destroyed in World War
II were restored but have not been equipped with guns.. Recently shelters
for workers and their families were built near the living quarters provided
for them. Reinforced concrete underground shelters of various sizes are
located near the factories and offices.
4. The combine has its own hospital with 600 beds and a sanitorium with 200 beds
at Fagaras. In addition, there are the following: a central clinic with
400 beds; a first aid station with 120 beds; two dental clinics and special
facilities for tuberculosis.
5. The combine has around 509000 employees, including 19000 chief inspectors,,
engineers, superintendents and foremen; 14,000 skilled laborers; 8,000
skilled workers in training; 6,000 apprentices and the remainder are common
laborers. Foundries, materials plants, and various offices work three 8-hour
shifts daily starting at 0600 hours. The locomotive plant operates on three
8-hour shifts beginning at 0700 hours. All types of recreation facilities
are provided for the workers.
