east of Seyskari Island (N 60-02, E 28-23), a naval vessel was seen lying at
anchor east of buoy No. 2. The vessel was 200 feet long; it had a raked bow,
a square cruiser stern, a long forward superstructure, and one twin-barreled
gun in a turret on the foredeck. The ship's bridge had a signal mast, and
the stack was located close to the bridge. Aft of the stack there was a mount-
ing with two Oerlikons,and there were two guns beside each other on the after-
deck. The guns on the afterdeck had splinter shields, and
were cen me ers. 1' a vessel h ly one mast . There was a
gun of about 10 centimeters on the foredeck.

was seen crossing the northern minefield see sketch No. 1). The ship was 25X1
about 2,000 to 2,500 DWT and it was loaded.

of Kronshtadt, four naval vessels were seen lying at anchor on the starboard
side of the reach. The vessels were:
a. The OKTYABRSKAYA REVOLYUTSIYA.
b. Vessel No. 2, which was somewhat longer than the OKTYABRSKAYA REVOLYUTSIYA.
The ship had two stacks, and two gun turrets on both the foredeck and the
afterdeck. t re twin-barreled guns in all 25X1
the turrets. The vessel a long o " terdeck, aft of the gun turrets.
The vessel lay alongside the 0KTYYABRSKAYA REVOLYUTSIYA.

c. Vessel No. 3,I Iwas an old passenger ship. The
ship was about 10,000 tons, and it displayed a naval flag. Informant
saw many naval personnel aboard and he believed that the ship was a troop
transport.
d. Vessel No. 4, which was an old merchant ship of about 6,000 to 7,000
DWT, The vessel displayed a naval flag, and it had a crane on the
afterdeck.
4. On passing Kronshtadt, twelve submarines were seen, eight of which were in the
western basin, The submarines were of various types and sizes. Many of them
had two guns which projected aft; on some of the submarines, these guns were
in a line at various heights, and on others they were side by side. Some
submarines had guns on the forward edge of the tower.
5. A small submarine (see sketch No. 2) came from Kronshtadt and sailed westward.
It was 40 to 50 feet long, and it had an ordinary submarine bow and a wide
deck. The craft lay low- in the water; the deck was about two feet above the
surface of the water. There were holes for reading the tanks along the entire
side (sic). The submarine had a small tower with an oval outline; in the after
section of the tower there was an open trap door in which two men were seen..
No periscope was visible. Aft of the tower there was a grill work, which
appeared to be made of boards with 10 centimeters between each board. The
grillwork was placed lengthwise on the deck. There were two gums side by side
on the grillwork. The submarine sailed at a speed of about 16 to 18 knots.
When the submarine passed the four vessels mentioned in paragraph 3, it looked
as though the two men who were seated in the tower saluted and that the salute
was answered by one of the naval vessels.
6. In one of the basins at Kronshtadt there was a naval vessel which resembled
the OKTYABRSKAYA REVOLYUTSIYA. The view of this vessel was partly obscured.
In the vicinity there was a naval vessel which greatly resembled the one which
lay at anchor alongside the OKTYABRSKAYA REVOLYUTSIYA, as well as three vessels

were also three sailboats in the basin in addition to an older vessel
which seemed to have an entirely clear deck 25X1
with a single gun on it.

tower and it was painted to a point about two feet above the waterline; above
that there was only the base coat or unpainted steel.

at the Marti Shipyard. Only the tower was visible and informant believed
that the the vessel was lying in a drydock. At the Baltic Shipyard informant
could see two naval vessels under construction. There was a large shi in the
sli'? to the west and a smaller one in a slip to the east. no 25X1
stacks or masts on the vessel in the western slip but it had a typical naval
tower. The hull appeared to be completed.
12. Outside the Kanonerskiy Shipyard there was a third vessel of the same type as
the one which was at anchor alongside the OKTYABRSKAYA REVOLYUTSIYA. A good
view of the vessel was prevented by a number of buildings but 25X1
work was being done on its bridge. The masts were incomplete; on y 25X1
the lower parts were in place. One of the masts seemed to be connected with
the bridge. 25X1

13. There were three ships in the Kanonerskiy Shipyard undergoing repairs and a
fourth which was under construction. The new ship was from 5,000 to 6,000
DWT and, the work of putting up the masts was underway. There was no special
equipment on the ship but on the after-quarter of the boat deck there was a
small island which was for an antiaircraft gun. The ship 25X1
did not have a name. One of the vessels which was undergoing repairs was a
lumber boat of 2,000 to 3,000 DWT.`. It was at the pier outside the shipyard.,.'
the working tenWo at the yard was poor and that the 25X1
work methods were old-fashioned. Almost no work was being done on the new
ship.
14+. On departure, the pilot was accompanied by a man who wore a merchant marine
uniform with rings and a hollow square on his sleeve. He sat in the chart-
house during the entire trip. A guard boat followed from 25X1
the pier to the lightship, where the pilot and his compan op departed.

cannon" as well as the three sailing vessels, all in the same position (para-
graph 6). The other vessels looked as if they were in different positions,
but the possibilities of observing them were not ticularly good. 25X1

distance beyond the lightship. There was also a destroyer at anchor nearby.
