Zavod No. 12 and the Georgi Dimitrov Factory

1. The Georgi Dimitrov Locomotive Factory in Sofia is completely separate and in-
dependent from Zavod No. 12. The Georgi Dimitrov Factory is located immediately
in front of the central railroad station, while Zavod No. 12 is located on General
Totleben Street which passes the Military Hospital. It is Zavod No. 12 rather
than the Georgi Dimitrov Factory which formerly was the Inzheniera Rabotilnitsa
(Military Engineers' Workshop).
2. The Georgi Dimitrov Factory performs the following functions:
a. Repairs steam locomotives;
b. Repairs passenger cars and freight cars (closed and flat);

c. In late 1951, began manufacturing steam locomotives;
two new locomotives were put out by the factory in November and December 1951;
and
d. Toward the end of 1951s also began manufacturing railroad passenger cars and
closed and flat freight cars.
3. Zavod No. 12,(the former Engineers' Workshop) produces the following:
A. Internal combustion motors for auto vehicles;.and
b. Chassis and bodies for auto vehicles.

!.. The Bakish Tire Factory is located north of Sofia, exactly four and one-half
kilometers from. the central, railroad station on the Sofia-Pleven route. The

factory is situated several meters to the west of the rail line and is between
the Voenna Rampa and Ilyantsi suburbs.
5. noted one 3-story building approximately 60
by 140 meters in size, grey-colored, which has a metal chimney approximately 35
meters high along its side. Various small 1-story buildings And storage sheds
are located in the vicinity of the large building.
6. The factory employs approximately 700-800 workers and produces the following:
a. Automobile tires;
b. Bicycle tires;
c. Inner tubes for automobiles and bicycles
d. Rubber boots and half-boots;
e. Rubber sneakers for gymnastics; and
f. Rubber sneakers for work.

7. The Elprom Factory is not a single complex but consists of five or six buildings
located in various parts of Sofia and its suburbs. one of 25X1
these buildings is located in Knyazhevo, nine kilometers southwest of Sofia, which
is reached by Streetcar Line No. 5.
8. at the factory, there
are three 8-hour shifts per day. ~thieactory produces the. 25X1
following items:
a. Electric motors of up to 30-35 kilowatts;
b. Telephones;
c. Telephone switchboards;
d. Electric belle;
e. Current transformers; and
f. A small amount of telephone wire.

The Committee for Science, Art and Culture - January 1952
1. The KNIK (Komitet za Nauka, Izkustvo, i Kultura; Committee for Science, Art and
Culture) is located at No. 1, Ruski Boulevard in Sofia in a 4-story building approxi-
mately 40 by 30 meters in size which is directly in'front of the :Russian church.
2. The KNIK was organized in 1945-1946 and is subordinate to the Central Committee
of'the Communist Party. Its duties are to organize and direct the studies of the
superior schools (Polytechnics and the University) and of all the artistic and
cultural'showings (performances, exhibitions) etc.). Writers, poets, critics,
painters, sculptors, etc. must be members of the Committee and conform their
activities and creations to the directives issued by the Committee.
3. The'Pres ident of the Committee is Ruben Levi,
He was named president of the KNIK in January 25X1
1952 but still has not been appointed by official decree. His predecessor is
`Professor Sava Ganovski, professor of philosophy at the University of Sofia.
4. There are two vice presidents, of which one--Jac Natan, who 25X1
is awaiting dismissal from his post and expecting a replacement.
5. Approximately 200 persons work for the KNIK; at the end of 1951, there were approxi-
mately 500 workers, but these will be reduced to 200.
6. The Committee has the following subdivisions:
a. General.directorate;
b. Superior studies, arts, performances, and culture section;
c. Cultural exchange with foreign'countries section;

Reform of the Bulgarian University Program - End of 1950
7. As a result of a KNIK order, all university students in the various faculties
must not exceed their course of study by more than one year over that which is
prescribed by their specialty. If students fail during this period, they are
not allowed to finish their studies and may not take the faculty examinations.
An additional year is granted for the completion of studies only in cases of
illness and after certification by a special medical commission instituted by
the university.
S. In all university courses begun after the end of 1950, a new obligatory examina4..
,called:Diamat (Dialecticheski-Materialismo, dialectical materialism) has been
added. 'This test is primarily political in character and consists of Communist
history, doctrine, and ideology. students who greatly excel25X1
in this examination find it easier to obtain work upon completion of their studies.
9. The duration of university courses for the various faculties is as follows
a. Medicine, five years of study plus one year of practical training in a
hospital; followed by a State examination;
b. Engineering, five years, which includes four and one-half years of studies
plus one-half year of practical training in some enterprise;
c. Architecture, five years;
d. Law, four years;
e. Literature, four years;
f. Pharmaceutical chemistry, four years;
g. Agriculture, four years; and
h. Philosophy, four years.
