11. (Unclassified - THW) INTELLIGENCE BRIEFING Bruce
Van Vorst, on the staff of Senator Dick Clark (D. , Iowa), called requesting
a briefing for Monday, 21 June, at 4:00 p.m. , on the military situation in
a number of countries in Africa, including their capabilities and intentions,
and particularly the threats ea s for the other with special
emphasis on Kenya and Zaire. OCI, has been advised.
12. (Unclassified - THW) INTELLIGENCE BRIEFING I called
Marian Czarnecki, Chief of Staff, House International Relations Committee,,)
to advise him that Representative Stephen J. Solarz (D. , N. Y.) had asked
for a briefing on Mozambique, Rhodesia, Angola, South Africa, Zambia,
and possibly Zaire, for himself and Representative Michael Harrington
(D., Mass.). Czarnecki had no problem with such a briefing.
I also mentioned to him the questions posed to Ambassador Gunther.
Dean by the Special Subcommittee on Investigations regarding
Czarnecki said that Chairman Lee H. Hamilton (D., mdn . a
been asked by Chairman Thomas E. Morgan (D., Pa.), House International
Relations Committee, to close out the issue and that these questioi-&TA
resulted from that request and suggested that we answer them through the
Department of State unless we had major problems with them.
13. (Unclassified - THW) LIAISON I called Rick Gilmore, on the
staff of the Subcommittee on Multinational Corporations, Senate Foreign
Relations Committee, to advise him that since the hearing at which Director
Bush was to be asked to testify was an open session there was not much we
could contribute and that Director Bush was reluctant therefore to appear.
I suggested that we would be happy to provide the necessary briefers for an
executive session briefing. Gilmore said that he planned to send the letter
of invitation anyway as the matter had come up twice at Subcommittee meetings
and he felt the Subcommittee would still want to go on record as requesting
Mr. Bush's appearance. As to the date of the hearing, it appears that
June 30 is out from the Committee standpoint and the hearing may be post-
poned until after the July recess.
