The Director met again with the full House Armed Services Committee at 9:30 a. m. and the session lasted until about noon. Accompanying the Director were: R. J. Smith, Bruce Clarke and John S. Warner. Present from the Committee staff were: John R. Blandford Earl Morgan Philip W. Kelleher William H. Cook Frank Slatinshek Ralph Marshall General Alva R. Fitch, Deputy Director, DIA, was present as was Captain Arthur H. Berndtson, Legislative Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As in yesterday's briefing, there was a technical sweep and special security arrangements were made so that tapes and transcripts were in the custody of CIA. 2. The Chairman continued to call the roll to permit questions from all members. The subjects covered were varied. Mr. Hebert raised a question of the status of the Soviet civil defense program and the Director read the appropriate lines from the recent estimate. However, Mr. Hebert had further questions and the Director indicated he would provide an additional statement. Mr. Smith is working on this. Following yesterday's briefing, as well as today's, there were numerous laudatory statements to the Director as well as favorable comments made to the staff and the undersigned. The Chairman in particular was most gratified with the briefing having in mind the appropriate indoctrination of the many new members of the full Committee. I believe this briefing will long be remembered by those new members as well as the others as an outstanding briefing. JOHN S.
