This select, ten-month pro- gram, begun in 1958, is conducted annually by the Foreign Service Institute of the Department of State Twenty-seven senior career officers of the Department of State, the United States Infor- mation Agency, Agency for International De- velopment, Central Intelligence Agency, De- partment of Agriculture, Department of De- fense and the Armed Services, constitute the Seventeenth Seminar. Members' average age is forty-seven and their average length of Gov- ernment service is twenty-one years. AN OBJECTIVE: Updating knowledge of the USA One major goal of the Seminar is to update Members' knowledge of domestic U. S. affairs. The study of current issues - political, eco- nomic and social - in this country and of con- temporary trends in American science, indus- try and cultural life is a major feature of the Seminar's curriculum. On the spot exchanges with leaders in these fields and with eminent educators, businessmen, labor leaders and chief executives of state and municipalities during field trips are an important component of the Seminar program. This exposure enhances Members' ability to understand and interpret dynamic changes in the United States and to reach thoughtful judgments which will be of help in their fu- ture official capacities. The study of domestic affairs is a supple- ment to the Seminar's study of foreign policy problems. The Seminar program also includes individual travel to regions of the world in which Members have a special interest. These trips result in reports and case studies useful to Federal Agencies.
