Dear Pat:
Following up on our conversation of yesterday, you and
General Taylor might be interested In the following definitions
of "intelligence.
1. In CIA'6 training courses it to defined as follows:
Positive Intelligence -- The product resulting from the
collection, evaluation, collation, analysis, integration,
and interpretation of all available information concern-
tag other countries which is significant to a government's
development and execution of plans. policies and courses
of action.
2. The Dictionary of United States Military Terms
for Joint Usage uses this definition;
Intelligence -- The product resulting from the collection.
evaluation, analysis, integration, and interpretation of all
available information which concerns one or more aspects
of foreign nations or of areas of operations and which is
immediately or potentially significant to planning.
3. The Hoover Commission, in its-,report to Congress
in June 1955, said:
Intelligence deals with all the things which should be known
in advance of initiating a course of action.

4, The United States National Disclosure Policy
(NIX 206/29-64) uses the following:
Intelligence Is (1) the product resulting from the col-
lection. evaluationo analysis. integration. and inter-
pretation of information which concerns foreign nations
and other areas of operations and which is immediately
or potentially significant to planning or (2) information
of every description which is used in the production of
intelligence. It includes facts, observations, reports&
rumors, photographs, documentse etc.
I am also enclosing an excerpt from Sherman Kent' a book,
Strategic intelligence, which develops a definition a little further.
