BIOGRAPHIC TNFORMATION ON MEMBERS OF CZECHOSLOVAK ACADEMY OF SCIENCES -- Prague,

Prof Vojtech Jarnik, Ph. D, - President of the Physics and Mathematics
Section, formerly a professor at Charles University. He was born 22 December
1897 in Prague.
Jarnik is a widely known scholar and an outstanding mathematician, Last
year he was awarded the State Prize. He has published 89 scientific works,
among which area Introduction to Integral Calculus and Introduction to Differ-
ential Calculus, Jarniks specialty is the theory of numbers. In this field
he has attained world-wide fame with his theory, of ellipsoides to the nth power.
He has been teaching since 1925, and has been a full professor since 1935.
He is an active member of the most outstanding scientific institutes..
Prof Dr Frantisek Slavik President of the Geological and Geographic
Section.
Slavik is a professor of mineralogy at Charles University. He was born 18
August 1876 in Kutna Hora, studied chemistry, physics, and natural sciences at
the University of Prague. He became a Doctor of Philosophy in 3899; in 1910 he
became an associate professor and in 1916 a full professor and a director of the
Institute of Mineralogy. He was elected dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences
in 1924, and in 1937 became a lector at Charles University. In 1946 the Univer-
sity of Prague gave him an honorary doctorate in natural sciences, and in 1947,
the same year that he retired, he received the State Prize. During the occupa-
tion he was a member of the resistance group and had been imprisoned in concen-
tration camps in Osveti and Buchenwald. His scientific work is varied. It
touches on all branches of mineralogy, petrography, geology, geochemistry, and
science of ore deposits. He has made a study of several ore regions and his work
is of great importance for the future development of ore mining. His works
include a textbook on mineralogy; the Introduction of Special Mineralogy: Mineral
Resources; Mineralogy of Slovakia; he has published monographs on many other
topics in all the scientific branches in which he has worked. Slavik is a
member of the most important scientific societies both at home and abroad, as
well as a member of the All-Union Mineralogical Society of Moscow.

Malek was born 25 September 1909 in Zagreb, and is a professor of medical
microbiology at Charles University-

He is one of the leading scientific personalities and it is mainly the
result. of his efforts that CzechoslovAk biology has become oriented to the
Michurin line. He has published more than 100 scientific works. among them
three scientific textbooks: and the book Modern Science Battles with Microbes.
Malek is chiefly interested in diagnosis: He has found a new method of
recognizing infections; has worked or epidemiology and especially on antibiotics.
For his work and research on antibiotics he was honored in 1951 with the State
Prize. He has been interested in science since he was a medical student. He
graduated in 1946 and in 1.948 became a professor at the Medical Faculty of the
University of Prague. In 1950, he was given the tack of establishing a Central
Biological institute, of which tie is the alrector.

Pref Dr Frantisek Travnicek: President of the Language and Literature Section"
He was born 17 August 1888 in Spesov, Moravia.. He is a university professor
of Czech grammar and a rector at the Brno University. Professor Travnicek is
probably the best known Czech nationalist. His thesis at Prague University in
1920 was Studies of Aspects of Czech Words. In 1921, he was named an associate
professor in Brno and in 1927 a full professor. He was dean of the philosophical
faculty in 1933-1934 and at present is the rector.
Travnicek's most outstanding activity is his study of the history of the
Czech language, which resulted i. his most important work, Historical Czechoslovak
Grammar, which is both phonetic and morphological. The crowning work of his
research is his two-part Grammar of Literate Czech, which is in its third edition;
the first part of it has been translated into Russian and it was published in
Moscow in 1950. Noteworthy portzons of Travnicek's work are his studies in Czech
as well as Slovak dialectolopy. and as an outstanding teacher he has schooled
several ramarkablc pupils in it. He has also published a Pictionary of the Czech
Language. in collaboration with Professor Vasa; this work isin its fourth edition,
Since the liberation. Travnicek has become an active member and functionary of
the KSC (Czechoslovak Communist Party), and a member of the National. Assembly;
he is also active in several scientific councils and associations. He has pub-
lished a total of 150 works
