MISSION HIGHLIGHTS
Mission C176C, flown over South China on 24 August 1966, pro-
vided the second indication of a native modification to the Soviet
SA-2 surface-to-air missile system. While south of Canton, the
U-2 pilot experienced and reported activation of
and observed a missile contrail. Analysis of the mission's photog-
raphy did not show the missiles, but did reveal the previously
unidentified site that fired at the U-2.
One fighter was noted airborne in response to the mission, but it
does not appear to have attempted an interception.
