NOTICE
The Ukrainian Supreme Council of Liberation, the Supreme Corrrand of the
Ukrainian Insurgent Army, and the Provid of the Organization of Ukrainian
Nationalists in the Ukraine share with the underground cadres and with the
whole Ukrainian nation the painful news that
in th., village of Bilohorsheha near Lemberg vov , in his underground ea
quarters during a fight with the ;oscow-Bolshevik occupants, the head of
the UHVR General Secretariat, the General Secretary of the UHVR Lilitary
Division, the Supreme Commander of the UPA, and the head of the Provid of
the OUN in the Ukraine was killed? The Golden Cross of Merit and the
Golden Cross of Combat merit, 1st Class, bars been awarded.
General of the UPA, Roman Shukevich j5lso known under the pseudonyms of
Lozovski, Taras Chuprinka, Tur, has died the death of a hero.
The late Shukevich-Tur was born in 1901. After finishing secondary school,
he entered the Polytechnic Institutewhicrn he finished with distinction"
In his early youth the late Shukevich--Tur becan.e active in the revolutionary
strugk;le for the liberation of the Ukraine.
In the middle twenties he joined the ranks of the underground Ukrainian
Military Organization (UVO); and, between 1925 and 1929, he joined in,
organized, and directed various combat actions against the Polish occupiers.
In 1929 he joined the OUN as one of its first members and for a long time
occupied the post of Chief Combat Reporter in the OUN Executive at home,
In this post he demonstrated his boundless youthful energy, organizational
abilities, and courage.
As a consequence of his revolutionary, political, and combat activity against
the Polish occupying powers, he was imprisoned by the Poles.

In 1938 and 1939 he took active part in the organizing of armed forces for
the''young Ukrainian State in the'Sub-Carpathian Ukraine and organizing and
directing of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen.
In 1939 and 1940 he worked in the Provid of the OUN,maintaining liaison 'with
the Ukrainian lands in the USSR. In 1940 and 1941 he became a member of
the Revolutionary Directorate of the OUN. In the spring of 1941 he partici-
pated in the Second Great Congress of the OUNa After this meeting he be-
came leader of the OUN in the Western Ukrainian-lands outside USSR frontiers,
in the so-called General Government. During all this time he worked con-
tinuously as a member of the Supreme General Staff of the OUN and lectured
on various military subjects in the secret military courses organized for
the training of OUN cadres.
In 1941 the late friend Shukevich-Tur organized and commanded the Ukrainian
Legion and, at the same time, was engaged in various personal activities
on behalf of the Provid of the OUNO He occupied this post until the spring
of 1943,,when he became the member of the Provid of the OUN who reported on
.military matters.
In August 1943 the Third Axtraordinary Great Congress of the OUN elected
the late Shukevich-Tur to the post of head of the UUN Provid Bureau.. In
autumn of the same year he became the Supreme Commander of the UPA; and,as
such, in November 1942 (sic) he played a leading part in the preparations
for the First Conference of Enslaved Peoples in Volyn.
In July 1944 the late Shukevich-Lozoveki took part in the First General
Meeting of the UHVF. and was elected head of the UHVR General Secretariat.
The President of the UHVR confirmed him in his posts of General Secretary
for military matters and Supreme Commander of the UPA.
Occupying the posts of head of the UHVR General Secretariat, General
Secretary of the UHVR Military Division, Supreme Commander of the UPA,
and head of the Provid of the OUN in the Ukraine, the late Roman Shukevich-
Lozoveki-Taras Chuprinka-Tur, in the years 1944 to 1950 directed the libera-
tion evolutionary fight of the UPA being fought by many thousands. He
also led the armed underground of the OUN and the millions of Ukrainians
who struggled against the German-Hitlerite and Moscow-Bols3'ivik occupiers
and defended the Ukrainian nation from terror and plunder*' He helped ex-
tend the influence of the Ukrainian Liberation revolutionary movement
which is fighting for the liberation of theUkraine from foreign domination
.and which is fighting for the creation in'Ukrainian lands of, the Independent
United Ukrainian State (USSD) based on a just and progressive political
and socio-economic order. This struggle for liberation under the experienced
and courageous leadership of the late General Shukevich-Chuprinka was waged
between 1943 and 1950 by the UPA, the OUN underground, and by the masses
of the Ukrainian nation against the occupying powers.. The mass heroism and
patriotism which were demonstrated by the stubbornness and many aacrificesp
by the, extraordinarily difficult circumstances in which the struggle took
place have no equal either in the history of the Ukrainian nation or in
the history of the world.- This fight will always constitute one of the most
glorious and heroic pages in Ukrainian history.
As a result. of this struggle, the 1osrow-Bolshevik occupiers have not succeeded
in their plans for destroying an organized Ukrainian liberation movement.
They have not succeeded in bringing the Ukrainian nation to its knees. At
present, the Ukrainian liberation movement is not broken up nor destroyed.,
and although it'suffered many losses in men, it continues the unequal
struggle against Moscow-Bolshevik tyranny, defending the national existence
of the Ukrainian nation in the name of the nationally-independent state of
the Ukraine.
The history of the revolutionary. fight for liberation of the Ukrainian nation
in the Ukraine, in the years 1943,to'1950 is irrevocably and forever bound
up with the name of the late ShuktvichF-lazoveki-Taras Chuprinka-Tur.

As a revolutionary leader, our late friend possessed great organizational
and military talent, great political wisdom, and great experieng'e in the
revolutionary struggle, In the loss of his person the Ukrainian liberation
revolutionary movement and the whole Ukrainian nation have suffered. the lose
of a political and military leader of the first magnitude0
His political firmness, his boundless personal courage, his, mobility and
vivacity, his simplicity in daily life, his "firm hand" and. at the same time
his fatherly care for the well-being of others were the chief characteristics
of the late General Shukevich-Chuprinka w:tich gained him-sympath;,r and in-
spired others to offer themselves joyfully for the hard fight against the
enemy of the Ukraine.
With this glorious memory in our minds, looking to this heroic figure of
combatant and leader of the liberation movement, .inspired by his courage
and optimism, hardened by the experience gained from him, loyal to the._
end to the ideal of liberation of the Ukrainian nation, we will courageously
continue the liberation struggle until'. our complete victory,
We will not lay down our arms/we will no-,-, cease to fight until the Ukraine
has been liberated.
