A Statistical Summary
Introduction
This compilation of statistical information on the
foreign trade of the East European Communist
countries is designed as an aid to research on the
foreign trade of these countries. It contains the
following tables: geographic distribution of trade
turnover of the East European Communist coun-
tries combined and of individual countries for the
years 1958 and 1960-68; exports and imports of
the individual East European Communist countries
with the Communist countries and with the Free
World for the years 1958 and 1960-68; commodity
composition of exports and imports of each of the
East European Communist countries for 1960, 1963,
1965, 1967, and 1968, except East Germany (data
on the commodity composition of East Germany's
trade are not available for the years 1963, 1967, and
1968); and commodity composition of exports and
imports for 1960 and 1965 of the East European
Communist countries combined.
The area breakdowns used in the tab1G are as
follows: East European Communist Countries: Bul-
garia, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary,
Poland, and Romania; Far Fast Communist Coun-
tries: Communist China, North Korea, and North
Vietnam; Other Communist Countries: Albania,
Cuba, Mongolia, and Yugoslavia (Cuba is listed
as a Free World less developed country prior to
1960). The Free World is broken down into the
Developed Countries: Western Europe (except Por-
tugal, Spain, and Greece), the United States, Can-
ada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and the Repub-
lie of South Africa; and the Less Developed Coun-
tries: Asia (except Japan), Africa (except the Re-
public of South Africa), Latin America (except
Cuba), and Spain, Portugal, and Greece.
The data iti, this handbook have been compiled
primarily from official yearbooks and monthly sta-
tistical bulletins published in the various East Euro-
pean Communist countries. The principal sources
of statistical data on foreign trade of these coun-
tries are listed in Appendix B. Where official data
are not available for trade with the Free World,
data from the trading partners, as compiled by the
United States Department of Commerce, have been
used. All data are given in current US dollars con-
verted from national currencies at official rates of
exchange (see Appendix A). All six East European
Communist countries report export data on an f.o.b.
basis (exports include re-exports). Hungary's im-
posts are recorded as c.i.f. Bulgaria, East Germany,
and Poland report imports on an f.o.b. basis as
does Czechoslovakia, but it is believed that Czecho-
slovakia s imports are actually recorded on a c.i.f.
basis. Romania does not indicate the basis on which
its imports are recorded, but imports from the Free
World are believed to be c.i.f.
The symbol "-" is used when relevant informa-
tion is not available. Within each table, data for
the individual countries have been rounded. Be-
cause of rounding, components may not add to the
totals shown.
