SUBJECT: Processing Weekly Report for Week
Ending 29 September 1981
1. Systems Availability: Attached is the Systems
Availability Report.
STAT 2. The had a good week. The longest outages
occurred outside the prime shift. Early Wednesday, GIMPROD lost
40 minutes due to an apparent problem with an IBM disk controller,
but no hardware problem was isolated. Seventy-two minutes was
lost by JES and Batch on Friday night due to hardware problems
which arose after some equipment changes. Saturday afternoon, JES
and Batch lost about two hourG each due to a bad chip in a Telex

3. In the Special Center, CAMPROD had eight unscheduled
interruptions this week; the most serious problem arose on
Monday, when an IBM terminal controller failed, for a loss of 79
minutes. More than an hour was lost Wednesday and Thursday due
to CAMS software. On Thursday, DDOSTAR, DDONIPS, and DDOGIMS
all were halted for about an hour each when an Amdahl 470/V6 hung
on a Telex disk pack holding the system software.
4. MPS - We met with Commo and Applications to review
system integrity problems. Several actions are underway, includ-
in an end-to-end check from CDS, to get a handle on our problems.
5. MPS - We ran a test of printing OER traffic in the OCO
operations center. This test was to determine the impact on OCO
of moving the OER printers to to support USSR.

STAT 6. of SPD and
STAT briefed the CAMS2 contractors on VM, AIM and STAT
GIM II. Follow-up meetings are pJanned r the purpose of clarifying
issues related to GFE Software. STAT
7. CEMB/ED installed channel to channel adapters from the
IBM 3033-MP to the IBM 370/168-2 and 168-3 on Friday, 25 September.
These installs were implemented to support networking. STAT
8. Delivery and installation of the first Burroughs equipment
began on Tuesday, 29 September. 1 -1 STAT
9. TP/ED installed and tested a new switching device on
the CAMS (VM backup) printer I on Wednesday, 23
September. This switching device allows the CAMS printer to be
used as a hardware backup to the existing VM printer.
10. OD has received approval from OS for the installation
of Secure Access Control System (SACS) Terminal in the Safe Computer
Center. In addition, necessary modifications have been made to
accommodate the addition of an 'S' indicator to the badge. An
authorized access list for indicators will be furnished to the Office
STAT of Security.
11. The following is an update on the water leak problem
that occurred in the Special Center Tape Library on 16 September.
All wet tapes were dried by hand according
to the procedures for handling water
tapes.
o Dry tapes that were removed but did not
suffer water damage were returned to the
library after 24 hours.
o Wet tape racks were dried and left vacant
for 24 hours.
o Tapes that were in scratch status prior to
the damage were replaced.
o A memorandum was sent to the users along with
a list of their tapes asking if the suspect
tapes could be categorized as scratch
immediate need or hold immediate attention
unnecessary. Two hundred and fifty tapes
were replaced with the user assistance.
o All self loaders and numbers have been put
back on all the remaining suspect tapes.
These tapes will continue to be isolated

from the library. They are stored in numeric
order outside the tape library within the
center. These tapes now number less than 400.
o Any tape that is of immediate need has been
set aside to be certified. If the tape is
without error the user is notified to set up
a tape copy.

o The scratch list is checked each day. Should
any of the damaged tapes in hold appear on
the list it is replaced with a new tape and
returned to the library.
No major problems have surfaced since the occurrence of the
water problems. OD continues to look into safeguards such as tape
rack canopies or plastic covers to circumvent problems should another

STAT P.S. was transferred to CSS from OD for a two
year rotation, he will be assigned to the Systems Administrative
STAT Group.

ALL systems, with the exception of BATCH, reported above
the goal of 96 percent for the week. BATCH experienced 4
hours and 37 minutes of hardware problems, a 2 hour and 30
minute power outage (VEPCO) and 33 minutes lost due to
software errors.
