The German organization which administered coal mines in the Katowiee, Poland area during World War II was called the Reichswerke Hermann Or- ing Hanptverwaltung. As far as the offices in Katowice were concerned, they only dealt with the mining of coal and did not manufacture machinery. However, the firm did possess machine building plants, but not in Katowice. , I do not know where those plants were located. 2. There were at least 10 to 12 coal mines within a radius of 15 to 25 kilometres of Katowice I knew only one mine reasonably well. It was located at Knurovo, approximately 25 kilometres from Katowice. I believe the mine was to the west of' Katowice. The coal in the area was not anthracite; I think it was bituminous. It was used for trains; also, certain plants in the area converted the coal so that it could be used by automobiles. The Knurovo mine, in late 1944, was being expanded. It was a mechanized mine, with conveyors, elevators, and drawworks. 3. There was a mall coal mine - called Oheim GrUbe - Which was practically in Katowice.. I would say that it was about two kilometres west of the city. This mine was also mechanized.
