CUBAN SITUATION
Representative H. R. Gross, February 7, 1963, UPI
Rep. H. R. Gross of Iowa, one of the newly-added Republican conservatives
on the Foreign Affairs Committee. Said there might not be so many GOP
complaints "if there was not so much managed news and managed information out
of this Administration."
For one thing, Gross said, people would like to know why there was such
a "Fiasco" at the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. He said the
responsibility for this should be fixed.

Rep. H. R. Gross, R-lowa, said the U. S. should apply An ironclad
blockade" on Cuba. Rep. William C. Cramer, R-F1a., favored an "Airtight
trade ban" on nations which trade with Cuba.

Meantime Rep. Armistead Selden, D-Ala. Chairman of a Foreign Affairs
Subcommittee on Latin America, said the real throat from Castro Cuba lies in
its potential for subversion throughout the Americas.
He told the House whether Soviet arms in Cuba are "defensive
offensive" in the long run may be irrelevant.
"Our continued failure to recognize and cops with the export of Castroism in
Latin America is an open invitation to the creation of new Vietnams on our own
hemispheric border, `' he said.
Therefore, Selden said his Subcommittee will start hearings of Feb. 18

Rep. John S. Monagan, I3-Conn., a member of the House Foreign Affairs
Committee, joined Administration supporters firing back at the critics of U. S.
intelligence estimates.
"Everyone is an expert on Cuba, " Monagan said, "and strangely, the ones
who have never been there. And particularly those who are the greatest distance
from Cuba, are the greatest experts.
