Thank you for your letter of June 19 and the information
from Senora Delano on a reported Christian Democratic hold-up
of activity by women's organizations concerning the Presidential
election.
My staff has been in contact with Des FitzGerald's staff on
this subject, and I understand both staffs were surprised at this
report and unaware of any such action, despite the fact that they are
closely following women's activities affecting the election.
I have asked for a check in Santiago on this report, however,
since I believe nothing should be left to chance regarding the
effectiveness of anti-Allende action in this field. All of us concerned
have been keenly aware of the decisive factor of the women's vote,
especially given Frei's special appeal in this sector. I will let you
know if any problems exist which cannot be quickly resolved.
