MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Representative Nedzi's Conversation of Today with
Seymour Hersh of the New York Times
1. In meeting with Representative Nedzi on other matters today
he told me he had talked earlier to Seymour Hersh. The conversation
raised some questions in his mind about Agency investigative activities
within the United States. He said that Mr. Hersh had picked up the
allegation that narcotics coming into the United States were coming out
of Indochina on Continental Airline flights. I explained to Representative
Nedzi that although we have had extensive contract relations at various
times with Continental in the Far East that it is a privately owned
corporation and that we have had no management or operational control
of the company or its facilities. Mr. Nedzi asked who would have
responsibility for checking out such flights. I told him as far as entry
into the United States, we would have no responsibility whatsoever,
that this would be a Customs and BNDD function. Any information that
we would have concerning narcotics transport on American carriers in
the field would be relayed by us to BNDD.
. 3. Mr. Nedzi told me that the allegation related by Hersh that
concerned him most was that the Agency had used pressure in trying to
get an individual American travelling to China to cooperate in supplying
information. As related to Nedzi, the individual was apparently told that
