BARBARA TUCHMAN
1. Barbara Tuchman, distinguished author, will be the CIA
Guest Speaker on Thursday, 1. March 1979, at 3:00 p.m. in the
Headquarters Auditorium. She will discuss "An Inquiry into the
Persistence of Unwisdom in Government." She will be introduced
by the Director of Central Intelligence.
2.. Mrs.'Tuchman, who writes history as literature, is twice
winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Her works include Bible and Sword,
1956; The Zimmerman Telegram, 1958; The Guns of August, 1962 (Pulitzer
Prize); The Proud Tower, 1966; Stilwell and the American Experience in
China, 1971 Pulitzer Prize); and A Distant Mirror, 1978. This last,
published in September 1978, became an immediate nonfiction best seller.
Her books have been translated into 13 languages. Mrs. Tuchman is also
author of the short Notes from China, published in 1972, and has contributed
widely to both scholarly and popular journals.
3. Mrs. Tuchman has lectured widely and has served in a number
of scholarly and public service positions including trustee of Radcliffe
College, 1960-72; President of the Society of American Historians, 1970-73;
and member of the Council of the Smithsonian. She was elected to the
American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1971 and now serves as Vice
Chancellor for Literature. She has received numerous honorary degrees and
awards including in 1978 the Gold Medal for History of the American
Academy of Arts and Letters.
4. Mrs. Tuchman was born in New York City. After education at
the Walden School and Radcliffe College, she worked'as a research assistant
for the Institute of Pacific Relations, including a year at the Institute's
office in Tokyo. She was on the editorial staff of Nation for the next
two years, reporting from Madrid on the Spanish civil war in 1937. Prior
to her marriage to Dr. Lester R. Tuchman, she reported on the U.S. for
The New Statesman and Nation, and after Pearl Harbor served on the Far
Eastern desk of the Office of War Information from 1943-45.

Barbara W. Tuchman writes history as. literature and is twice a winner
of the Pulitzer Prize. She was born in New York City in 1912, the daughter
of Alma Morgenthau and Maurice Wertheim, banker and founder of Wertheim
and Co., granddaughter of Henry Morgenthau Sr., former Ambassador to Turkey,
and niece of Henry Morgenthau Jr., Secretary of the Treasury in the Roosevelt
Administrations. After education at the Walden School and Radcliffe College,
she worked as research assistant for the Institute of Pacific Relations, in-
cluding a year in Tokyo at the Institute's office there. She was on the edi-
torial staff of The Nation for the next two years, reporting from Madrid
on the Spanish civil war in 1937. Prior to her marriage to Dr Lester R.
Tuchman in 1940, she reported on the U.S. for The New Statesman and Nation .
of London and after Pearl Harbor served on the Far Eastern desk of the

Mrs Tuchman is the author of BIBLE AND SWORD, 1956, THE ZIMLERMMtiAN
TELEGRAM, 1958, THE GUNS OF AUGUST, 1962 (Pulitzer Prize), THE PROUD TOWER,
1966, STIJ. ELL AND THE, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE IN CUINA, 1971 (Pulitzer Prize).
The three last books were full selections of the Book-of-the-Month Club,
and together the books have been translated into thirteen languages in-
cluding Hebrew and Japanese. Mrs T'ucliman is also the author of i1OTES FROM
CHINA published in 1972 and has contributed many historical and critical
Atlantic Monthly, harpers, The New York Times
articles to Foreign Affairs,
Book Review, 0p:IFd page, and r , pzine, and other journals.

As a speaker Barbara Tuchman has given the Pegram Lectures at Brookhaven
National Laboratory, the Phi Beta Kappa Address at Harvard, the Charter Day
address at University of California, Berkeley, the Admiral Spruance lecture
at the Naval War College, and many others. She was a trustee of Radcliffe
College, 1960-72, president of the Society of American Historians, 1970-73,
and serves as treasurer of the Author's Guild, Council member of the
Author's League, and member of the Council of the Smithsonian. She has
received the Hon. D. Litt. from Yale, Columbia, N.Y.U., Williams, U. Mass.,
Smith, among others and the Order of Leopold of Belgium. She was elected
to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1971 and now serves as its
Vice Chancellor for literature. In 1978, the Academy awarded her its
Gold Medal for History.
Her latest book, A DISTANT MIRROR, was published in September of 1978
and immediately became the Number One Non-fiction Best Seller in the country
with over 200,000 copies in print.
Mrs. Tuchman is the mother of three daughters and a resident of Cos
Cobb, Connecticut.
