THIRD GENERATION HARDWARE Procurement
10 Feb 1965, ADCS memo to DDS&T
Reported OCS study of past few months looking toward
hardware requirements of OCS for future. Projected workload
could not continue to be handled on present equipment; also
efficiency would be increased with an integrated hardware
and programming system with greater flexibility than currently
available. The new THIRD GENERATION computer hardware
was announced by manufacturers during 1964 and major tech
nical advances achieved offered greater reliability, speed,
compat.bility with software and lower costs per unit of
data processed.
A move to the IBM System )2 360 was viewed as thoroughly
sound by Mr. Becker and in view of possibility
for setting the hardware for O or several years to
come; and the potential ability to drive remote systems
such as from OCS central computer, offered
potenti aving under such consolidation.
