Approved For Release 1999/09/24: CIA-RDP84-00951 R000400050009-6 OCD AS OF 1954 At the beginning of 1954 OCD was two-thirds of the way Gemplatt through the Jamie Andrews era. It had thro its running-in phase and was functioning well in carrying out its mission of providing a central reference service to CIA and to the Intelligence Community. Organizationally, SIPW /t consisted of seven divisions--the CIA Library the Biograph iiii 40 ic Industrial, Graphics and Special Registers; and internally oriented the Liaison and Machine Divisions--and tmo/staffs--Administrative and Operations. The divisions can best be understood as a series of AdvaA, Liaison. Division, concentric rings. On the outer ring was the which arranged for the receipt and dissemination of the ineoming7~ In the center were grouped the CIA Library, which filed and cataloged documents providing access by subject, area, source, date or security classification, and 6 tkx also responsible for all overt CIA publications procurement; and the four Registers, which concei ated on specialized segments of the total input. At the CCL center lm. the Machine Division'a provid ,the mechanization needed to tie all this together. Because researchers required references quickly and because the quafii:tity of intelligence documentation was staggering even in those early days, OCD developed the Intellofax System--the facsimile reproduction of citations to and abstracts from intelligence documents.
