Prior to the beginning of the US air strikes in 1965, the North
Vietnamese had deployed CROSS SLOT radars on high ground along the coast
and on offshore islands for a combined air search and surface search
capability. These sites were subjected to air str:i.kes and are no longer
in operation. It is probable that smaller shipboard radars have since
been installed along the coast. Only one installation of this type has
been observed on photography. This is probably due to the relatively
small size of this equipment and the use of camouflage.
CROSS SLOT radars are still carried in the North Vietnamese electronic
order of battle. These radars are probably camouflaged and have not been
observed on photography.

Ground Controlled Approach
Two Soviet ground controlled approach (GCA~ systems have been
identified at North Vietnamese airfields.
The air search radar (LONG EYE or ONE EYE acquires tre approaching
aircraft at long range and directs it into the limited field of view of
the precision approach radar (PAR.
The precision approach radar (HOME TALK or TWO SPOT is used by the
ground controller to guide the aircraft to landing by providing azimuth
and elevation information.
Air to ground communication is provided by DISC CONE antennas
maintained on stick masts or the PAR van.
