Q. Why has the "double-dippingscandal"involving
CIA Director Stanfield Turner been hushed up by
the news media?-H. F, Temple, Tex.
A. On the contrary, it has been widely publicized:
Turner retired from the Navy on Dec. 31,.1978, in
time to collect a $23,390 annual lifetime pension
plus his salary of $57,500 a year as CIA director. A
ceiling was ' imposed on "double-dipping '-col-.
lecting a government pension and a civilian govern-
ment salaryat the same time-for military officers
retiring after )an.11,1979. Turner, surely deserving
of his Navy pension, made it a point to retire before
that date. Other officers did the same but were
spared the publicity that spotlighted Turner.
