PARAPSYCHOLOGY, OF WHICH EXTRASENSORY PERCEPTION
(ESP) IS A BRANCH, IS NOT TRANSITORY. SINCE REPORTS
OF APPARENTLY SIGNIFICANT ESP PERFORMANCES ARE INCR-
EASING IN NUMBER, IT BECOMES MORE IMPORTANT TO USE
THE MOST RIGOROUS OF EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES IN
TESTING THE ESP HYPOTHESIS. A DESIGN OF A SCIENTIF-
ICALLY RIGOROUS EXPERIMENT IN ESP IS PRESENTED AS
AN ACCEPTABLE MODEL FOR WORK IN THIS FIELD. THIS
REPORT COVERS THE DESIGN OF AN OBJECTIVE TEST OF
THREE MODES OF ESP, PRETEST CONSIDERATIONS AND PLAN-
NING, FINAL TESTING, AND RESULTS OBTAINED USING
THE SPECIALLY DESIGNED TESTING AND RECORDING MACHINE
THE VERITAC. FINALLY, A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF
THE RESULTS AND A DISCUSSION OF STATISTICAL CONSIDE-
RATIONS ARE PRESENTED. (AUTHOR) (U)

REPRINT FROM CANAD. JNL. PSYCHOL., 17:1, PP.118-17
3, 1963. (COPIES NOT SUPPLIED BY DDC)
DESCRIPTORS: (*SENSORY DEPRIVATION, CONFINEMENT (PSY-
CHOLOGY)), VISUAL PERCEPTION, AUDITORY PERCEPTION,
ATTENTION, PARAPSYCHOLOGY, MOTOR REACTIONS, VERBAL
BEHAVIOR, PSYCHOMOTOR TESTS, STRESS (PSYCHOLOGY),
PERSONALITY, ILLUSIONS, SENSATION (PHYSIOLOGY) ,
MOTION (U)
THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE WHETHER
SEVERE RESTRICTION OF KINESTHETIC STIMULATION ALONE
WILL PRODUCE ANY OF THE TYPICAL SENSORY AND PERCEPT-
UAL DEPRIVATION PHENOMENA. AN ANALYSIS OF THE DATA
REVEALED THAT IMMOBILIZED SUBJECTS REPORTED A SIGNI-
FICANTLY GREATER INCIDENCE OF INTELLECTUAL INEFFICI-
ENCY, BIZARRE THOUGHTS, EXAGGERATED EMOTIONAL REACT-
IONS, TIME DISTORTIONS, CHANGES IN BODY IMAGE, UNUS-
UAL BODILY SENSATIONS, AND VARIOUS PHYSICAL DISCOMF-
ORTS, THAN DID THE RECUMBENT CONTROL SUBJECTS. HALL-
UCINATORY PHONOME"JA, ALTHOUGH PRESENT, WERE RARE.
ON THE PERCEPTUAL-MOTOR TESTS, THERE WAS A SIGNIFIC-
ANT IMPAIRMENT OF DEXTERITY, KINESTHETIC ACUITY,
COLOUR DISCRIMINATION, AND REVERSIBLE FIGURES. PERC-
EPTION OF SIMPLE PATTERNS WAS ALSO AFFECTED TO SOME
DEGREE. PAIN SENSITIVITY, TACTUAL ACUITY, AND A
TEST OF CANCELLATION OF FIGURES WERE NOT AFFECTED.
NONE OF THE TESTS OF THE INTELLECTUAL BATTERY WERE
IMPAIRED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT REDUCTION OF KINESTH-
ETIC STIMULATION ALONE CAN PRODUCE PEHAVIOURAL CHAN-
GES SIMILAR IN MANY RESPECTS TO THOSE OCCURRING
UNDER IEDUCED VISUAL AND AUDITORY STIMULATION.
