A communications-liaison unit associated with an element of COSVN stated that as a result of Allied operations "many commo liaison personnel were missing and it is not clear whether they are dead or alive..., hundreds were killed and hundreds were captured alive." Earlier, this same enemy communications entity had aired their difficulties noting a shortage of rice and the fact that "the units were approaching difficulties which could not be overcome." A recently intercepted message from an enemy unit located southeast of,Saigon (445th VC Battalion) reflected the impact which Cambodian cross- border operations have had on logistical support for in-country enemy forces. On 17 May this unit reported shortages of both weapons and ammunition and difficulties in obtaining resupply. This message further stated that without resupply these elements would be unable to participate in upcoming planned tactical activities. Also related to the problems confronting enemy forces as a result of our cross.border operations is a recent intercept from the traffic of the 5th VC Division. These messages indicated the elements of this division were targeted against Allied units operating immediately south of the Cambodian border in the vicinity of Bu Dop. DIA's estimate is that these planned operations are apart of a continuing NVA/VC effort to divert Allied attention and thus relieve pressure on Communist forces in Cambodia. Concerning the status of road LOC's leading to Phnom Penh, routes #1, #4, #5, and #6 are open, but with escort required for #1 and #4. The railroad line between Kompong Som (Sihanoukville) and Phnom Penh remains cut. The railroad line between Phnom Penh and the Thai border, however, is serviceable.
