In response to your standing request, Director Helms has provided
the attached memorandum which updates information on Soviet
forces in Mongolia and the PRC reaction to those forces.
In brief, the CIA report states that there is no evidence to support
a recent claim by a Chinese official that the Sovitts have stationed
3005)00 men along the frontier of Mongolia and China. CIA puts
the Soviet strength in Mongolia at three ground forces divisions,
some army-level support units and Front Aviation air units, At
current strength, this force has about 31,000 men.
