last summer.
The Indonesian Embassy has requested an appointment for the Sultan
to pay a courtesy call on you. The Sultan would be willing to come to
Washington anytime during the period July 10-15.
If convenient, I believe it would ? be appropriate for you to receive the

to the fact that he is one of the few hereditary aristocrats who ?supported
the independence movement in Indonesia against Dutch colonial rule.
?Your receiving him world reaffirm the high importance we attach to
.Indonesia. Also, in the light of the several cuts we have made in
economic and military assistance to Indonesia, your seeing him Would
bolster the credibility of our support for the Suharto Government's ?
. economic development and internal stabilization. program Talking.

? Alternatively, you may wish to send a message of greetings to the
.Sultan;, a draft letter is at Tab A.
