No Objection to Declassification in Part 2010/03/01: LOC-HAK-450-7-24-8 MEMORANDUM TO'ONAL SECURITY COUNCIL TOP SECRET/SENSITIVE INFORMATICbN-"' 21 December 1971 FROM : ADMIRAL WELANDER SUBJECT: ARVN Interdiction Operations into Base Areas 701/702 You may recall my memo of 16 November on the same subject and HAK's notation thereon (copy attached). In response to a CJCS query as to the desirability of extending operational authorities for US air support beyond 20 December, both COMUSMACV and CINCPAC recommended a 60 day extension to encourage continued RVNAF disruption of enemy operations during the current dry season buildup. COMUSMACV cited a battalion-sized raid on 14 December into Base Area 702 which met with moderate success (but was not highlighted in reports back to Washington) and plans for similar raids to be conducted on 18 and 20 December. The Chairman supported this request and on 20 December the SECDEF granted an extension of authorities until 29 February 1972. While the operations have not been of the scale or frequency foreseen in.early November, I would assume such is due in some measure to RVNAF focus on the other operations since undertaken into the Chup and Southern Cambodia and, recently, the concentration of air assets in Northern Laos. This aspect is being investigated. Copy to: (w/o attachment) Colonel Kennedy John Negroponte ON-FILE NSC RELEASE INSTRUCTIONS APPLY TOP SECRET SENSITIVE To.
